If you’re passionate about natural hair, you don’t have to be a Youtube guru in order to generate income from your passion.
Passion For Natural Hair
I’ve worn my hair without a relaxer since 2009. Since that time I’ve seen natural hair become a ‘movement’ within the beauty industry. Black women spend millions on their hair annually, so its definitely an area that’s considered a passion. Who doesn’t want beautiful, healthy hair?
These videos will change your life – not only for the styles and info they provide – but also because they each have 1 MILLION views. Most Youtube vloggers don’t reach that many viewers.

How To Profit From Your Passion
The fastest route to profit from your passion business is to establish yourself as an expert. This is a scary prospect for a new entrepreneur; it’s almost like bragging, which we hate doing. Trust me though, if you’re passionate about something and spend your free time immersed in learning about it and doing it, you know more than at least 80% of the population. So own your expertise.
In a niche as broad as natural hair for black women, I’d advise you to narrow down your focus. You’d easily draw attention by focusing on one element that naturalistas love – such as transitioning, styling, product reviews, or how to grow hair longer. Sure, you’d create more content if you were more general – but creating a ‘claim to fame’ will instantly set you apart in this crowded field. Women who are looking for the specific advice you give will find you easier if you’re not doing the same thing as everyone else.
In order to get started, you’ll need:
- a blog
- a mailing list
- a social media account
- marketing plan
- a product or service to offer
Start your blog. Since you plan to use your blog to generate income, don’t be an amateur and use a free blogging platform. Hosting WordPress on your own website is inexpensive, and there are numerous tutorials to show you how. Once your blog is up, post content that your readers will want to read, and give them an incentive to return to your blog again and again.
Grow your mailing list. This step depends on how much you have to invest into your marketing budget. There are free ways of getting people to your website to sign up for your mailing list – such as posting in forums, on Youtube videos, and on others’ blogs and Facebook fan pages – but free marketing costs you in time. If you can invest money into paid marketing, you’d grow your mailing list much faster and will start to make money faster as well.
Choose one social media website. You have alot to do already in the regular course of your day. Promoting your blog, getting mailing list subscribers and maintaining your business will take sacrifice, dedication and work. Even though you’ll love it, you’ll need to put in the time to be successful. Don’t make things harder on yourself by marketing on more than one platform.
Since I’ve been blogging for several years, I’ve mastered the habits that make blogging successful. I can devote time to Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, in addition to the time needed to write blog posts and find relevant pictures. However, when I first started out, I only used Facebook to promote my blog. It takes time to master it all so don’t make things harder on yourself by splitting your attention between several platforms. Start on one and expand once you’ve mastered that.
Put it all together in a marketing plan. Once you’ve created your blog, social media account, and established how much you can spend on marketing, its time to sit down and plan it all out. Create a daily routine so you can be focused when you sit down to blog. Assign as many hours as you can to blogging. And be realistic with your expectations. Don’t assume that people will find your blog just because it exists. However, once you start getting comments and people start responding to your emails, you’ll know your dedication has paid off.
Offer products and/or services to your mailing list. Here is the crux of the business and your ultimate aim. You can’t make money if you don’t have anything for sale. And if your goal is not to make money, your efforts are furthering your hobby and are not really contributing to a business. If you plan on blogging about natural hair to promote your services, such as styling services, then you’ll come to the table with a way to get paid. Any ads you place on your blog, as well as revenue you’ll generate if you’re on Youtube, are definitely worthwhile income streams for your business.
If you don’t have products or services of your own, you can promote other people’s offers to your list and get paid as an affiliate. I’ve found the most lucrative and easy to use system was created for bloggers in mind. No matter the subject, you can create your dream business based on this affiliate program and start living your dreams, all while doing something you love.
